White Wine - Caracol dos Profetas
REF: Vinho Branco - Caracol Dos ProfetasCaracol is a traditional grape variety from the island of Porto Santo. There are several stories and myths about its potential origin, such as the one about a certain Mr. Caramujo who brought and planted it. António Maçanita’s insatiable curiosity led him to analyze the microsatellites, which demonstrate its enormous genetic proximity to Listrão, differing by only one out of a total of 20, possibly sharing the same progenitor or being progenitors of each other. Regarding the name, research in old bibliography may also provide the reason for the name Caramujo. Gaspar Frutuoso stated in 1580: “there are many vineyards that produce good grapes; many white snails are created in them, in such a quantity that, in parts, they cover the bunch of grapes so much that no berry appears”.
”Fazendas de Areia” refers to plots whose soils are pure, calcareous sands, from which grapes with a different level of complexity and concentration are produced. ”Fazenda” is the term used locally to designate a place, small property, or farm. ”Areia” refers to the type of soil found on these farms, calcareous sandstones resulting from accumulation over millions of years.
It came from 40 to 80 years old.
